Greyhound Laying For Profit

Greyhound Laying For Profit

Greyhound laying is a way to earn money by laying Greyhounds to lose a race. This is alot easier than you might think because there are only ever 6 Greyhounds in a race - at least in the UK - and it is always easy to spot Greyhounds that are going to lose

How Does Laying Work

Laying works by in effect backing a dog to lose. The betting exchanges like BetFair give you the option of either backing something to win or laying something to lose. Its that simple. The great thing is that there are always people out there that are willing to back just about anything - and in the case of Greyhounds the betting markets are often very close - partly due to the fact that there are only 6 dogs taking part. You might have noticed for example that in horse races where there only a few horses in the race then favourites get priced shorter and shorter

In greyhound racing the betting market is often very close - this means people cant actually work which dog will win and so you often end up with joint favourites - or even co-favourites - this is where as many as three of the dogs are all sent off as favourite!

Many more people will back just a favourite trap number irrespective of what the form book says - so its usually always possible to lay a dog even if it has no hope of winning, because if it is running from someones favourites trap number - then they will want to back it anyway

Greyhounds Make The Best Laying Bets

Greyhounds make a great laying prospect because the way that dogs run means that they often bump into each other, and getting the right draw can be very important. So a dog that is sandwiched in the middles between other dogs, might get pushed around all over the place and therefore might have lost its chance alltogether

Greyhounds can also be badly affected by a bad race experience - they are a bit like humans in this respect - once you have been bumped and kicked a few times you sort of get used to it and so you half expect things to go bad. So it can take a few races for greyhounds to get their confidence back

Greyhounds And The Clock

Many greyhound races are decided by speed. As there is no one to guide the greyhound once the race begins, the essential ingredient of form is always going to be how fast the dog was in its last race. Of course there are many tyhings that can affect this - for example if a dog was bumped or badly hampered or if there was a wind blowing etc - these kind of factors can all adversely affect the time on the clock that a dog recorded

However we can always keep a note of a dogs best speed in recent races. This will give us a clue as to whether the dog can beat the other 5 dogs in the race on speed

Greyhound Racing And The Draw

Another key factor is the success of a dog in a race comes down to the draw - what trap is the dog going to be drawn from. Many dogs have a habit of racing either close to the rail or going out wide, while others will basically stick to the middle. These basic characteristics mean that a "railer" for example will be drawn only from either trap1 or 2 - but sometimes trap3, depending on the other dogs in the race. A "wide" dog will always be given trap 5 or 6 and "middle" dogs will always end up with 3, 4 or 5. It really depends on how many dogs in the race are "railers", how many are "wide" and how many are "middle". The race administrator at the track will draw dogs at random for the traps available and most of the time the dogs will get roughly the traps that will work for them

Amazing Results From Trap 2

I myself am a great fan of trap 2 for losers - in fact I call it the trap for losers. Now I am not saying that every dog in a trap 2 position will lose - no! just that a dog which already suspect is going to find its task even more difficult if it is drawn from trap 2

I have developed a system for laying dogs that comes up with a great percentage of losers - often well over 90% and on many occasions as high as 100%

Over several years I have kept all the selections from my greyhound system, and what I noticed was that looking at the stats for every dog that was drawn from trap2, and which was running before 14.00hrs, there was an astonishing number of losers - in fact over several years the percentage was logged at only 4% winners. So 96% of all greyhounds selected by my system when running before 14.00hrs lost their race - and when I calculated the overall profit, it came out at a whopping 60% overall profit

Other Factors

there are lots of other factors that must be taken into account as well - such as the grading system the dogs are running in. What grades have the dogs been running in the previous races, and how did the betting market rate their chances of success

Hopefully you can see that there is alot more to being successful with laying dogs than just picking the right trap - however from my research trap2 dogs when used in conjunction with my system for losers shows that as few as 4% of trap2 dogs will win. This means there is a huge potential 60% overall profit in laying from the betting exchanges if we concentrate on laying greyhounds in trap2
